Weaker than Water

"In the world, there is nothing more submissive and weak than water. Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong, nothing can surpass it." –Lao Tzu

For hours we walk through fading foliage, talking

Philosophy, you complaining it is impossible

To be original, to think a thought that has

Never been thought before.  How can we explore a tree,

A stream, a season, and still uncover an undiscovered

Gem?  We are, you say, hostages of tradition, of parched

Paper and empty, golden goblets, of words that harken

Back to the Bible, to the Greeks, to Earth’s advent, to

Further past than these.  You would die

For something new.  You despair that we are victims

Of every age before us, how bound we are by our own time,

Useless in resisting its influence.  Yet, the genius,

The madman, the artist, the idiot, attack it at every

Chance.  The Earth reels on its axis, the seas rise

In rebellion, while in this late autumn, the sun sets red,

As if protesting inevitable winter.
