Weaker than Water

"In the world, there is nothing more submissive and weak than water. Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong, nothing can surpass it." –Lao Tzu

Once, I was proficient in immediacy,
reaching a wet hand to your face—
foamy armed, tub-warmed, fragrant enough for the holiest high,
I, submerged—

you,
already dressed, immortally above me,
young and quick,
firm-chested,

borrowed,
staring at what I tried to hide

beneath the bubbles’
hum.

When had you never been my Jesus?
When was it we began
to understand time’s long fingers were stroking my face,
down, downwards, down, below my eyes,
down, down, down my cheeks and chin,
down towards my neck,
down
until our future dissolved like bath salt,
my skin wrinkling in quick-cooling water?
