Weaker than Water

I’ve Decided

And at eighty-five, when I am still alive,

I shall eat microwaved protein bars

and iceberg lettuce, sip sugar-free

fruit punch that turns my tongue the envy

of pale-mouthed rock and rollers, lounge

in a salted bath, read Agatha Christie

novels I might have read already,

tell the dogs to get off the bed,

(after feeding them cheesy popcorn),

ignore the telephone, pick at my feet,

buy ugly dresses on the internet,

horrify my children by talking about sex,

let laundry replicate as it wishes,

ask someone else to take care of the dishes,

finger my way through scrapbooks,

and think, “Not much has changed.”
